Catching Up…Where Y’all Been?

I know. It’s been nearly 2 years since I’ve made any updates to my site. I’m trying to do better!

My new single, “Love Letters,” is available on Bandcamp!

Since the last time I posted here, so much has happened! As you may recall, in February 2022 I released my single “Alright,” and the EP it calls home, ‘LOVER,’ arrived in July of that year. Both the single and full 4-track project are available on all streaming platforms, but as an independent artist it’s especially sweet when folks download directly from Bandcamp. Which leads me to my first big announcement of the new year: NEW MUSIC! Last week, on 2 February, I released my latest single, “Love Letters,” exclusively on the aforementioned site. Don’t worry, it’ll be on streaming in the coming weeks. For now, you can stream and download it directly from Bandcamp.

Back to what’s been up since my last post…One of the biggest highlights has been participating in a series of symposia curated by De Angela Duff, celebrating Prince. As a lifelong purple devotée, it’s been an absolute dream come true to have the opportunity to gather virtually and, more recently, in person with scholars, musicians, music historians, and just all-around dope humans to geek out about Prince’s music and enduring cultural impact. Last spring, I traveled to New York for De Angela’s Triple Threat symposium, commemorating the 40th anniversaries of Prince’s ‘1999,’ The Time‘s ‘What Time Is It?,’ and Vanity 6‘s first and only release.

I got to sit on an all-woman panel discussing Vanity 6 with Chinisha Scott, Brittany Proctor-Habil, and Laura Tibert. It was a stone gas, honey. The highlight of the weekend was having my two sisters come in from DC to hang out and celebrate my birthday with me!

Another highlight from 2023 was joining my fellow members of SONA (Songwriters of North America) to march in solidarity with WGA during the writers strike last summer. SONA is an organization dedicated to advocacy for songwriters and does incredible work in pushing for fair pay. While it’s not a union, it made perfect sense for us as music creators to show up for writers and actors as they fought for pay equity.

It was VERY hot that day.

Rounding out the end of 2023, I had the pleasure of performing at a holiday fundraiser for NPH, a non-profit organization that provides support for children in Central America. I closed the year with a live performance video of “Closing of the Year,” my cover of the song by Hans Zimmer and Trevor Horn and performed by two of my favorite artists, Wendy & Lisa, on the soundtrack to the motion picture ‘Toys,’ I released my version of the song at the end of 2020, and every year around the holidays I dust it off to share anew. I also performed it, along with Stevie Wonder‘s “Someday at Christmas,” at the fundraiser.

I recorded this live in my living room.

So what’s next? Well, I’m focused on getting “Love Letters” into as many ears as possible. I’m so proud of this song, not just because I wrote, arranged, and produced it, but because it’s just an incredible love song that everyone should hear and add to their playlists. In addition to readying the song for release on streaming, I’m also prepping to present at the 2024 Pop Con, happening in early March here in LA! I’m stoked to present a paper at this 3-day music conference–it’s my first time! I’m headed back to NYC in the spring for this year’s Prince symposium celebrating the iconic ‘Purple Rain.’ More details to come. And fingers crossed, I’ll get some traction on my album, ‘Love & Water,’ which has been in the works for several years but isn’t quite ready for release. It’s an album comprised of songs about grief, love, and loss, mostly written between 2010 (shortly after I lost my eldest sister to suicide) and 2018-ish, and I want it to be perfect.

Stay tuned!
